Why did you choose UK for Med-Peds? My wife and I really were really impressed with the people and culture at UK. We knew we wanted to live in a new state at some point, and UK made Kentucky the clear choice. Also, I'm interested in academic and rural medicine, a combination that UK excels in!

Favorite thing about living in Lexington: Getting outside for some fresh air is easy in Lexington and, for most of the year, the scenery is beautiful. The fall, in particular, is hard to beat. Lexington is also a perfect size for me 鈥� affordable, growing, big enough to always have something to do, and small enough to navigate without major traffic.

Your go-to weekend getaway: Asheville, NC

Favorite memory of residency so far: On Internal Medicine nights, learning how to make hospital mocktails and Frosties with my upper and co-intern and watching an the Netflix Tour De France documentary between admits.

Dream non-medical career: Travel consultant or event planner. I love a good itinerary.

Why did you choose UK for Med-Peds? UK鈥檚 Med-Peds program has the reputation for producing exceptionally competent, driven, and kind doctors. Many of the program鈥檚 residents have stayed at UK to become beloved attendings and educators. Med-Peds docs are everywhere here 鈥� from categorical subspecialties and the ICU to general primary care. They were some of my biggest role models during medical school, so I followed their lead and stayed here for residency.

Why did you choose UK for Med-Peds? I loved the faculty and residents as a student - they were some of the most influential role models, best educators, and inspiring leaders. I knew I'd get amazing, personalized training, have an incredibly supportive program, and learn from and care for some of the sickest patients in the country.

Favorite thing about living in Lexington: As someone who grew up in Louisville, KY, I find that the best thing about Lexington is that you get some of the big city feel while also getting all of the perks of a small town

Favorite memory of residency so far: Some of my most favorite memories come from spending time with my co-residents on night shift. It can be stressful at times, but the majority of the time we have a wonderful time socializing and if we are lucky, watching Harry Potter movies.  

Dream non-medical career: Marine biologist focusing on the study of Orcas (my favorite animal!).

Why did you choose UK for MedPeds? As someone who went to medical school at UK, I may be a little biased. With my special interest in critical care medicine, however, I wanted to train at a hospital which cared for a population with various medical pathologies. Furthermore, the MedPeds community at UK has a very strong presence and I wanted to learn and be mentored by faculty who have many of the same interests/training as I have.

Why did you choose UK for Med-Peds? The faculty love to teach and I love the community integration with the continuity clinic at Polk Dalton. Also, I grew up around here and getting a chance to give back to my community as resident was a chance I could not pass up!

Why did you choose UK for MedPeds? I remember being impressed by the community at this program. The residents and leadership were genuine, kind, and just seemed like a close-knit group of people. It made the program feel like something I wanted to be a part of. Something I didn鈥檛 get a great feel for until I started here was how large the Med-Peds presence is. There are Med-Peds docs everywhere, so it is a well-respected and well understood program here.

Hobbies/Interests: I write poetry, love art, and started horseback riding last year. Memoirs are my favorite genre of books to read, and my two favorites that I鈥檝e read so far are Marina Abramovic鈥檚 鈥淲alk through Walls鈥� and Edward Said鈥檚 鈥淥ut of Place.鈥�

Career goals: I came into medical school convinced that I鈥檇 pursue a career in geriatrics, but I am not so sure anymore! I am curious about cardiology, and would love to care for the human heart, but am keeping an open mind!

Favorite memory of residency so far: I have loved my meaningful patient experiences of course! I also had a great time during my wards night shifts, when my fellow residents and I set up a table and painted canvases to decorate the workroom. We ate snacks, listened to music, and had a lot of fun!

Dream non-medical career: While I couldn鈥檛 imagine doing anything else, if I had more time, I would add on working in an art exhibit or working as a florist.

Why did you choose UK for MedPeds? The humility and welcoming spirit of the UK MedPeds leadership and residents was evident immediately! Everyone I encountered before starting residency was geniune, kind and supportive. My time in residency has only reitterated this sentiment, and I could not be happier to call this my residency home.

Favorite Things about UK Med-Peds: Coming from out of state, everyone is the program is so genuine and truly cares about you which has made the transition so smooth! I have so much fun spending time with my co-interns grabbing dinner, (almost) winning trivia nights, and coming up with unique group chat names (currently "Stewart's Littles" named after our PD). The upper level residents have been so supportive and are amazing educators!

Hobbies/Interests: I love spending time with my dogs, traveling, hanging out with friends, discovering new restaurants, and dancing whenever I get the chance.

Career Goals: Still figuring it out, but I鈥檓 leaning toward Cardiology (especially congenital heart disease) or Palliative Care. I see myself in an academic setting, combining inpatient and outpatient work while also teaching and mentoring.

Favorite thing about living in Lexington: The hospitality here has been amazing. People are so friendly, and I love how easy it is to enjoy nature and the outdoors. Even though there鈥檚 no beach, the lakes and rivers make up for it. For me, Lexington has the perfect mix of city energy and countryside peace.

Go-to weekend getaway: Cincinnati, Henderson River, or pretty much any river nearby.

From day one, everyone at UK has been so warm and welcoming that I instantly felt at home. Dr. Stewart, Dr. Wimberly, the chiefs, Lean, and the faculty go above and beyond to make sure residents are supported and connected. What really excites me is being surrounded by so many Med-Peds trained physicians鈥擨 know I鈥檒l learn a lot from them and have great discussions. For me, UK is the perfect place to grow, with the chance to care for diverse patients, learn from complex cases, and be part of a community that values both high-tech medicine and human connection.

Favorite things about UK Med-Peds: Everyone I have worked with so far has been amazingly patient and kind. The scheduling for services is very accommodating. There is a surprising amount of faculty outside of the med-Peds department that are Med-Peds trained. The patient population is extremely diverse and rewarding to work with. Lastly the amount of resources I have available to get patients their medications cheaply has been an amazing advantage.

Favorite thing about living in Lexington: As an almost lifetime Lexington resident, there is so much to love about this place! Lots of outdoor activities here or close by with a diverse food and drink scene. Close to many other cities that makes weekend trips easy! Low cost of living to make my travel dreams a reality :)

Best bakery in and near Lexington: Futile bakery, Andy鈥檚 Artisan Bread in Frankfort (so worth the drive!!) 

Your go-to weekend getaway: Red River Gorge, Asheville or Boone North Carolina 

Dream non-medical career:  In my dream non-medical career I would run a travel agency that focused on foodie adventures at whatever destination you were going to!

Why did you choose UK for Med-Peds? Being at UK for medical school, I was able to see how wonderful all of the Med-Peds residents and faculty were first hand. Everyone is so kind, smart, and willing to help whenever you need anything. The two med-peds clinics at UK are diverse and top-notch and that was something very important to me in a residency program. UK鈥檚 patient population allows us to see very sick and complex patients that come from all over KY and nearby states, and I knew I would be well prepared for any career after my training here.
