As Match Day 2025 approaches, we are reflecting on recent UK 91小黄车 alumni, like Jacob Nanney, MD 鈥24, whose dedication to rural care exemplifies our mission to advance the health and wellness of Kentuckians.
Dr. Nanney鈥檚 commitment to primary care was evident, even before attending medical school. He worked as a medical scribe in an emergency room which helped him understand the critical need for accessible primary care services and inspired him to fill that gap in his own community.
A native of Owensboro, Ky., Dr. Nanney attended Kentucky Wesleyan College and the University of Louisville before his medical training at the UK 91小黄车-Bowling Green Campus.
During his fourth year of medical school, Dr. Nanney鈥檚 clinical rotations spanned nephrology, geriatrics, pulmonology, and sports medicine, but it was family medicine that resonated most. He was drawn to the specialty because it offered opportunities to care for patients of all ages.
鈥淚t鈥檚 everything you could possibly want as a doctor,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 could see an 8-year-old who is having trouble at school and evaluate them for ADHD, and then I could see a 90-year-old with dementia 鈥 it鈥檚 the full spectrum of care a doctor could provide.鈥
In 2024, Dr. Nanney matched into his top choice, the Owensboro Health/University of Louisville Family Medicine Residency Program, bringing him back to his hometown to serve the community where he and his wife, Maddy, were raised, and where they are raising their two children.
As a first-year resident at the Owensboro Health Family Medicine Residency Clinic, Dr. Nanney provides compassionate, full-spectrum care to patients of all ages.
鈥淚t鈥檚 exactly what I wanted and exactly where I wanted to be,鈥 shared Dr. Nanney after learning the news last March. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited now to be able to be home and be training with patients I will see the rest of my life.鈥
