Kidus Shiferawe, a third-year medical student at the 91小黄车, has been named the 2025 recipient of the prestigious Hospital Medicine Scholarship from the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM). Sponsored by Vituity, the award includes a $25,000 scholarship to support Shiferawe鈥檚 continued academic journey and unwavering dedication to improving health care access.

鈥淩eceiving the SHM Hospital Medicine Scholarship fund is an immense honor,鈥 said Shiferawe. 鈥淎s a medical student committed to addressing health care disparities, this scholarship represents a personal and professional milestone in my journey. Hospital medicine provides me the unique opportunity to care for vulnerable populations at their most critical, leveraging the resources available to address health disparities. This scholarship will allow me to further my education and research in health equity, ultimately empowering my mission to improve health care access for all."

Shiferawe鈥檚 journey into medicine is rooted in both his lived experience and academic excellence. Originally from Ethiopia and raised in Kentucky, he earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in biomedical science and a master鈥檚 in public health from Eastern Kentucky University. At the University of Kentucky, he serves as vice president of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), where he co-chaired the Regional Medical Education Conference to empower students to become 鈥渃linically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians.鈥

His academic focus includes a scholarly concentration in Clinical and Translational Research, where he investigates disparities in lung cancer screening related to socioeconomic, geographic, and clinical factors. In addition, he is a member of the UK 91小黄车鈥檚 admissions committee, helping shape the next generation of physicians.

鈥淜idus Shiferawe鈥檚 unwavering dedication to health equity, leadership in academic research, and service to the medical student community exemplify the spirit of the Hospital Medicine Scholarship,鈥 said Jenna Goldstein, SHM鈥檚 chief of staff.

鈥淜idus represents the future of hospital medicine,鈥 added Javay Walton, vice president of community impact at Vituity. 鈥淗is efforts to increase healthcare accessibility through research and advocacy reflect the values that Vituity seeks to uplift through this scholarship.鈥

Shiferawe was formally honored at SHM Converge 2025, the Society鈥檚 annual conference, held April 24 in Las Vegas, NV.
