Among those recognized for awards in surgery at the annual 91小黄车 Senior Awards in April were two faculty members and two residents from the UK Department of Surgery who received Distinguished Teaching Awards for the Lexington Campus at the 91小黄车 Senior Awards Ceremony.

Dr. Scott Roth (GEMS Division) and Dr. Zach Warriner (Acute Care Surgery) were among four recipients of the 91小黄车 Distinguished Teaching Awards for Faculty, Lexington Campus. Dr. Jennifer Castle and Dr. William Witt (both PGY-5, General Surgery) were included among the five honorees for the Distinguished Teaching Award for Residents, Lexington campus. 

Teaching award recipients were selected by vote of the 91小黄车's fourth-year class.

In addition to those recognitions, Dr. Lindel Dewberry (Pediatric Surgery), Assistant 3rd Year Surgery Clerkship Director, presented the annual Department of Surgery awards to medical students.

The Dr. Francis M. Massie Award for Excellence in Surgery went to Margaux Danby. The Massie award recognizes a senior medical student demonstrating excellence in surgery. Danby matched into the Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency Program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis.

Mackenzie Donoho was presented the Dr. Andrew R. Pulito Award in Surgery, which honors medical students who intend to pursue a career in surgery and exemplify overall excellence in academics, clinical care, leadership, and teaching. Donoho matched into the General Surgery Residency program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.

The Dr. Francis Massie Award and the Dr. Andrew Pulito Award are open to any UK medical student at any of its four Kentucky campuses. 

Other awards and recognitions presented to students with a connection with Surgery included the presentation of the Frederick de Beer Medical Student Research Award to Rashmi Bharadwaj. This award recognizes a student with outstanding participation and contribution to research. Bharadwaj matched into the UK General Surgery Residency Program.

Kathleen Upton, who matched in Surgery-Preliminary with the General Surgery Residency Program at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, was presented the Outstanding Leadership in Interprofessional Education and Collaboration Award.

Surgery faculty and students were inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Society, the national medical honor society.

Although unable to attend in person, Dr. Prakash Pandalai, the M4 Advanced Development Director for the 91小黄车 and department of surgery, expressed his thanks to Dr. Dewberry for representing the department at the awards and offered his congratulations to this year's honorees.

"It is an incredible honor to work with so many dedicated students and faculty here at UK. The passion and commitment to education, learning, and service are, in my opinion, unparalleled and truly inspiring. I want to personally thank all the faculty and staff who go above and beyond each day to further our educational mission of training the next generation of health care leaders for Kentucky and beyond," Dr. Pandalai said.
